DPS Dropping after Patch
This has been something I've been getting asked in the past two days since the patch hit. Priests, seriously, read the patch notes? Haste affects dots and is therefor more important now. That's why your DPS dropped. Your old rotation will not work anymore, and when you screw up your rotation, your DPS suffers. We're all facing it. So how can you fix it? So that's what this post is about. How do you fix your DPS economically and efficiently? 1) Practice on a Test Dummy to make a new rotation. It should still work with the DP, SWD, VT, MB, SWP, MF, refresh, but now you have to refresh in different orders. Things to remember with this is to keep your priority straight. Your SWP should be the fifth spell you apply so that shadow weaving has five stacks. Mind Flay refreshes SWP so you don't need to worry about that. The spells you need to refresh? DP, VT, and MB (since it causes Mind Trauma, I'm including this.) Your priority should ALWAYS be VT -> MB -> DP. Why? Well, VT is a DoT and helps, slightly, with mana regen. MB second because it's our big nuke. DP is a dot as well, but doesn't deal as much up front damage. You want to get your hardhitting spells out first. However, VT and DP now have a shorter cooldown due to haste. This means you get to cast it more frequently. This is actually a BUFF. These dots now deal their damage faster, which means you can apply it more often, and more damage is dealt overall. Don't forget to use SWD whenever it's off cooldown for an extra buff to damage, especially if the target is below 35%. 2) New Enchants. Do you have a hit enchant but are way over hitcap? Make it haste. If you can get a new enchant on an item that gives haste instead of crit, that might be a good idea. A good crit level is around 20-25%. Not only that, but hit cap is something you don't need to pass. Hitcap is 286 according to resources I've found, but I, myself, am sitting at over 400 hit. I'm going to say, you shouldn't be over 300, if you don't need to be. It's very easy to take the extra hit you have, be it enchants, and change those to sp+haste enchants. If you don't have hit enchants, then you might look at changing some sp or sp+crit enchants to sp+haste or straight haste. 3) New Gems. Just like enchants, you want to keep in mind hitcap. If you are hit capped and then some, change some of your gems from hit to sp+haste. If you don't have any hit gems then, just like enchants, if you can, change some gems to sp+haste, instead of sp, sp+crit, sp+hit, change them to sp+haste.
If you have 2800 sp, 400 hit, 30% crit, and 800 mp5 while casting, you might want to look at changing those hit, spirit, crit, and spellpower enchants and gems to haste, or at least adding haste onto it. Also, caster gear with haste is now very appealing to us. Roll on it. Even if your gear is same ilvl or just as good, maybe a little better in terms of amount of intellect or spell power on the item, but it has haste instead of something else, you might want to roll on it and try it out and see what happens on a test dummy. Most importantly, play with the dummies to make sure your rotation is up to par for your haste level and as your haste increases keep checking and improving. We will have a little bit of time for adjusting here, since we're going to a new 'play style.'
